BT Ingenium, responsible for supporting the authorization process for the Commissioning / Placing on the market (AMIS) of innovative hydrogen-powered locomotives, has finalized and issued the first safety analyzes carried out on the hydrogen fuel system of the railway vehicle under construction.
Having started more than a year ago alongside its customers, the manufacturer and design authority of the hydrogen fuel system and its final client, the railway integrator that creates the vehicle, with a regulatory framework of reference as still unknown today completely defined on the topic of the use of hydrogen in railway systems, finally with reference to the very recent “Guidelines for the authorization of hydrogen railway vehicles” issued by ANSFISA on 20/12/2023, it was possible to finalize and issue the first preliminary risk analysis of the new Hydogen Fuel System based on the use of Fuel Cell and hydrogen storage systems at low pressure (15 bar).
This first and important result has made it possible to define the safety functions for the hydrogen fuel system for the technical mitigation of the identified risks, leading to the allocation of a SIL level according to EN 50126 / EN 50129 necessary to establish the safety requirements to proceed to the subsequent risk analysis phase with CSM procedure of the locomotive according to Reg. (EU) 402/2013.
BT Ingenium, thanks to its thirty years of experience in the design and analysis of safety in the railway sector, is proud to be able to contribute to the Italian and European strategic objective of developing sustainable mobility systems, expressed in this specific project with the carrying out of study activities , research and experimentation on the use of hydrogen in the railway sector.
A big thank you to our customers who have given us this important opportunity to collaborate and make our recognized Railway Engineering, Homologations and RAMS skills available to these important objectives.
Focus Innovation, always one step ahead…
